Including Vice President Cheney, 46 men have served as Vice President of the United States.  Fourteen U.S. Vice Presidents ultimately became President, most having assumed the position upon the death of the President whom they served.

Thus far, the youngest Vice President to take the oath of office was John C. Breckinridge, who at age 36 became President James Buchanan's Vice President.  The oldest was Alben W. Barkely, who became President Harry Truman's Vice President at age 71.
