Members of Congress (whose salaries and pensions are taxpayer-funded), only lose their pensions if they are convicted of treason or espionage. The passage of separate ethics reform packages by the House and the Senate in January of 2007 added bribery and conspiracy to the list of reasons a Member could lose his or her pension and other retirement benefits but would apply to future – not those currently serving or retired – Members of Congress.
