On November 8, 1988, George Herbert Walker Bush, then-President Ronald Reagan's Vice President, was elected President of the United States.  Until that day, 152 years had elapsed since an incumbent Vice President was elected Chief Executive. The last sitting Vice President prior to George H.W. Bush to do so was Vice President Martin Van Buren, who succeeded President Andrew Jackson in the presidential election of 1836.
