Since 1789, Vice Presidents have voted 242 times to break ties in the U.S. Senate. Vice President John Adams holds the record, casting 29 tie-breaking votes during the eight years he served as President George Washington's Vice President. His closest rival, John C. Calhoun, who served for seven years as Vice President to Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, cast 28 tie-breaking votes. No one else has even come close to the records of Adams and Calhoun – the next most prolific tie-breaker is George M. Dallas, Vice President to President James Polk, with 19 tie-breaking votes cast.
Vice Presidents Johnson and Roosevelt cast no tie-breakers while in office, and Vice President Cheney has broken six ties in six years as President of the Senate.
