The third Saturday in May was designated by President Harry S. Truman as Armed Forces Day, “a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.”

The first Armed Forces Day was proclaimed on May 20, 1950 and has continued to be celebrated annually on the third Saturday in May.
