The Residence Bill of 1799 required Congress to convene in Washington, D.C. on the first Monday of December, 1800.
On May 15, President John Adams ordered the federal government to relocate and gave his cabinet and Congress 30 days "that the public offices may be opened in the city of Washington... by the 15th of June."
The move was completed 4 days ahead of schedule and on June 11, 1800, Washington, D.C. officially replaced Philadelphia as our nation's capital.
