Americans observe Constitution Day on September 17, the date on which in 1787 the document was signed by the members of the Constitutional Convention and sent to Congress for ratification by the states.

Article VII required "the ratification of the Conventions of nine states [to] be sufficient for the establishment of this Constitution".  New Hampshire claims the honor of putting the Constitution into effect, becoming the ninth state to ratify, on June 21, 1788.
