At 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, December 7, 1941, air and naval forces of Imperial Japan attacked the U.S. Pacific fleet berthed in Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. 2,350 Americans were killed, 1,178 were injured, 21 U.S. ships were sunk or disabled and 292 U.S. aircraft were damaged or destroyed on that "date which will live in infamy."
According to the National Park Service website:
"The USS Arizona Memorial is the final resting place for many of the battleship's 1,177 crew members who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The Memorial commemorates the site where World War II began for the United States."
