Social Security Totalization:  A Little Known Consequence of Amnesty for Illegal Aliens

Despite the recent defeat of so-called "comprehensive immigration reform," the issue continues to be a hot topic across the country.  As most Americans maintain the "enforcement only" mantra, some politicians in Washington are continuing to press for legislation granting amnesty and other benefits to illegal aliens.

Just this week, Democrats in the House of Representatives abandoned parliamentary procedure to reverse what appeared to be a successful vote to ban illegals from receiving food stamps and other taxpayer-funded benefits.  And, some in Congress still are actively working to grant such benefits, along with amnesty, to the 12-20 million people living and working in the country illegally.

Most Americans are familiar with the pros and cons of granting amnesty to illegal aliens.  But some of the consequences have flown under the radar and are being ignored by this nation's elected officials.

According to the American Seniors Association (ASA), a conservative grassroots advocacy organization representing tens of thousands of U.S. seniors, any renewed effort to pass national immigration reform must include Congressional scrutiny of a little-known agreement between the United States and Mexico.  That agreement, they claim, would obligate the U.S. to credit 12-20 million illegal aliens granted amnesty with full Social Security benefits.

Recently, ASA Founder Jerry Barton joined Renee Giachino, CFIF's Corporate Counsel and Senior Vice President, to discuss the "totalization" treaty with Mexico and the defeat of immigration legislation.
