Press Conference on Campaign Finance Lawsuit
U.S. Capitol, S-207, 3:30 p.m.

April 10, 2002

Statement by Eric Schippers, Executive Director,
Center for Individual Freedom

We are honored to be here today to stand beside this distinguished group of individuals and associations with whom we share a common goal of protecting the Constitution from what can best be described as the most extensive and insidious assault on political speech ever ventured in this country.

The Center for Individual Freedom enters this lawsuit for three reasons:

First, as a non-partisan, non-profit corporation actively engaged in public policy issues, the Center’s own voice would be severely restricted and, in some instances, silenced by this law.

Second, because our mission is to protect and defend individual freedoms and rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. This law represents one of the greatest threats to those freedoms that exists today.

Finally, this law has been portrayed as something it is not and is poorly understood for what it really is. We’re asking the courts to reinstate the constitutional principles which the politicians and the media supporting this law have abandoned.
