House Mandates Accountability for FBI’s Carnivore

The House of Representative this week, in passing the Department of Justice reauthorization bill, approved a measure that will bring accountability to the FBI’s Internet traffic surveillance system DCS 1000 or "Carnivore." The committee amendment to the reauthorization bill, authored by Representative Bob Barr (R-Georgia), requires the attorney general and FBI director to provide a detailed report on all uses of the cybersnooping system no later than 30 days after the fiscal years ending 2001 and 2002.
