Given the erratic nature of our nation’s legal system, many types of labels are necessary because manufacturers have a fear of outrageous lawsuits. Some warning labels can be funny, but the abundance and absurdity of some leave us questioning whether common sense still exists in America. Likewise, we wonder whether these wacky warning labels will make people less likely to read even the most important warnings on products.
For ten years, a U.S. consumer watchdog group, Michigan Law Abuse Watch (M-LAW), has sponsored a contest naming the top five goofiest warning labels. "It's supposed to be a humorous contest, but it's also supposed to get people to talk about the more serious issue of how our culture is changing because of all these lawsuits," Bob Dorigo Jones, founder of M-LAW, said. "We're hoping people take these as examples as to why they need to serve on juries and elect good judges." M-LAW is dedicated to restoring common sense and personal responsibility to the courts.
Now, Dorigo Jones has compiled some of silliest and most outrageous warning labels in his new book “Remove Child Before Folding: The 101 Stupidest, Silliest, and Wackiest Warning Labels Ever.” Recently, Dorigo Jones joined CFIF Corporate Counsel and Senior Vice President Renee Giachino to discuss the serious side of this funny book and how the litigation explosion is hurting America.
