So-Called "Railway Safety Act" Constitutes a Political Handout to Big Labor That Does Nothing to Improve Safety At All

America as we know it was built largely upon and because of our rail industry, and today it remains a pillar of our economy.

Unfortunately, a destructive proposal before Congress misleadingly named the "Railway Safety Act" (RSA), part of broader surface transportation reauthorization, threatens great harm to our railroads.

Simply put, the bill has nothing to do with improving safety, but has a lot to do with advancing the political agenda of Big Labor.  At a moment when inflation burdens American families and fragile supply chains remain vulnerable to disruption, the last thing our economy or rail sector need is another costly federal mandate imposed upon one of the nation’s most important transportation sectors.

As an initial matter, as noted by The Wall Street Journal, the…[more]

On the Biden Administration's Appointment of National School Board Association President Viola Garcia to the National Assessment Governing Board:

"The Department of Education earlier this month tapped the president of the National School Board Association to serve on a federal board that tracks student progress, the latest indication of the Biden administration's collaboration with the group that compared parents to domestic terrorists.

"Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on Oct. 13 appointed National School Board Association president Viola Garcia to the National Assessment Governing Board, which develops the tests used to track student achievement across the country. Garcia was behind a Sept. 29 letter urging President Joe Biden to have the FBI monitor school board meetings for potential violence. The Department of Justice formed a task force on Oct. 4 consisting of the FBI and Justice Department's national security and civil rights divisions, sparking outrage from parents groups who say the administration is trying to stifle parents who oppose mask mandates and left-wing curricula.

"Garcia's position on the board could raise questions about whether the appointment was linked to her advocacy work at the National School Board Association. Emails reported by the Washington Free Beacon show Garcia coordinated with the Biden White House and Department of Education in the weeks before releasing the controversial letter. 'These are troubling times. NSBA has been engaged with the White House and the Department of Education on these and other issues related to the pandemic for several weeks now,' Garcia wrote in an Oct. 2 email obtained by the group Parents Defending Education.

"The National School Board Association apologized for the letter on Friday, saying there was 'no justification' for the language comparing parents to terrorists. Other emails showed that some National School Board Association directors were upset with Garcia for issuing the letter without the board's input. One director said that the letter's reference to parents as domestic terrorists inflamed tensions at local school board meetings."

On the Biden Administration's Public Relation Push on Climate Change and the So-Called 'Build Back Better' Agenda:

"If you've been taking the latest climate warnings from the White House seriously and literally, you believe the Earth is about to become either a ball of fire or an enormous ocean.

"I humbly suggest a more likely possibility: You are being blitzed by a government snow job.

"The claim that the end is near is the latest example of how the Biden administration is creating more problems for itself than it is solving. That the climate scare effort employs a whole-of-government approach doesn't make it any more credible.

"Quite the contrary. The sudden storm of dystopian scenarios churned out by the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, financial regulators and other administration mouthpieces is part of a desperate public-relations campaign to boost a sagging President Biden at home and on the global stage.

"The aim is to scare Americans into supporting the left's moribund Build Back Better monstrosity and convince world leaders the president is a committed climate soldier at a United Nations summit in Scotland next week.

"So far, no luck on either front."

On the Campaign Ad By Vice President Kamala Harris That Is Playing in Black Churches Across Virginia:

"Douglas Wilder, the only African American governor in Virginia's history, is no fan of the video endorsement Vice President Kamala Harris made for Terry McAuliffe, which is being played Sundays in hundreds of the Old Dominion's black churches.

"The ad, which ethics and legal experts say is a clear violation of IRS rules, is set to continue playing right up until the Nov. 2 gubernatorial election, as the Democratic Party pulls out all the stops to ensure black turnout. But a thumbs-down from the 90-year-old Wilder, a Democrat and highly respected voice in Virginia politics for decades, is significant.

"'Well, it's very good for her to do that, causing these churches to lose their tax-exempt status,' he quipped, referring to the Johnson Amendment, a rule that prohibits 501(c)(3) organizations, such as charities and churches, from engaging in any political campaign activity. 'If this is legal, then it's surprising to me.'"

On the Biden Administration and Current State of Affairs:

"'If I had a world of my own,' said Alice, 'everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn't. And contrariwise, what it is, it wouldn't be, and what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?'

"Rumor has it that Alice is preparing to apply for a job in the White House press office.

"And not a moment too soon, either, for, having offered himself up as the savior of the American way, President Biden now finds himself in something of a pickle.

"The jobs reports are lackluster. The border is a mess. Gas prices are sky high. Our supply chains are broken. Inflation, which was supposed to be 'trasitory,' looks more persistent by the day. Americans remain stranded in Afghanistan. China's testing space nukes. COVID is not only still with us; it's making its way into the Good States. And, despite its having been given a jolly, catchy name -- the 'Build Build Back Better agenda' -- all the public seems to know about the president's gargantuan spending plan is that it will cost trillions upon trillions of dollars.

"Down the rabbit hole, though, everything is still peachy."

On Supply-Chain Disruptions:

"At the end of last week, there were 584 container ships idling off the world's ports, waiting to be loaded or unloaded. Disruptions in the bulk cargo sector look to be even worse.

"Experts suggest the problems are temporary. For instance, Bloomberg columnist Brooke Sutherland maintains that three weeks of declines in ocean freight rates tells us 'the worst may be over for the supply-chain snarls that have plagued shipments of everything from Coca-Cola Co. ingredients to paint, toys, and industrial fasteners.'

"The optimism, however, is premature. The snarls could last years. Moreover, the severe disruptions, however long they persist, will help end the current period of globalization. Interconnectedness, it is now evident, has a steep price.

"The backlog is serious. 'Companies are waiting for goods they ordered a year ago,' Jonathan Bass, CEO of WhomHome and an onshoring advocate, told me during a recent conversation. 'Predictions that we will come out of supply-chain issues in the summer of 2022 are way off base. I think 2024 is more realistic.'

"In the meantime, expect empty shelves. ice President Kamala Harris, while in Singapore in August, suggested Americans do their holiday shopping early."

On Kentucky's Election Integrity Bill:

"A Democratic governor signed an election integrity bill into law -- with Republican support.

"In the hyperbolic, hyper-partisan political landscape we're facing, this type of situation would be normally unthinkable. But in Kentucky, that's exactly what happened.

"What followed was also a break from the norm. Instead of the traditional cacophony of media smears and outlandish claims against yet another governor trying to hurt voters, especially minority voters, Kentucky barely made headlines.

"When Georgia passed a comprehensive election security bill in March, it was just another step to 'supressing the vote' and companies were falling over themselves to cut ties with anything to do with Georgia.

"When Texas passed similar legislation in August, it marked 'new voting restrictions' in the Lone Star state and Democrats literally fled the state to avoid their responsibility to debate and vote on this legislation.

"But when Kentucky passed a 168-page voting package with remarkably similar provisions to both of these states, it was....a 'bipartisan election bill expanding early and absentee voting.' After a series of matter-of-fact headlines about the package, the issue quickly disappeared from the media after Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear signed it into law."

On Inflation and President Biden’s Trillion-Dollar Spending Spree:

"Just as inflation can cause more inflation, one of the biggest drivers of today's budget deficits are yesterday's budget deficits. The federal government is currently spending more than half a trillion dollars a year on interest payments for money borrowed in the past -- money that already has been spent. That's more than we spend on any cabinet agency except the Department of Defense -- and the cost of interest payments is getting close to that. We are something like the fool who uses a new credit card to pay his old credit card without ever paying down the debt, instead adding to it every day.

"No one will take responsibility for this. ...

"The result is that there is at present no one of any consequence in Washington with a mind to set our fiscal affairs in order.

"When all the money in the world isn't enough to make good on our promises, it is time to think fearfully about Stein's Law, named for economist Herbert Stein: "If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.'

"Our budget game is one part musical chairs, one part Russian roulette, and somebody is going to have to lose when the music stops."

On the Hunter Biden Scandal:

"'Come on H this is linked to Celtic's account.' Those nine words from a retired Secret Service agent to Hunter Biden in recently released emails may prove a nasty complication for some in Washington who have struggled to contain the blowback from the still-unfolding scandal linked to Hunter Biden's infamous laptop.

"'Celtic' was the Secret Service code name for Joe Biden, and recent disclosures may puncture the media's cone-of-silence around the scandal. The emails link President Biden to his son's accounts and indicate a commingling of funds with money coming from controversial foreign sources. Even more embarrassing, the shared account may have been used to pay a Russian prostitute named 'Yanna.'

"The commingling of funds is the latest contraction of President Biden's repeated claims that he was unaware and uninvolved in past dealings by his son. Given these links, there are legitimate questions of why the Justice Department has not sought a special counsel in the ongoing investigation of alleged money-laundering and tax violations linked to the president's son. More importantly, even if there are no criminal charges, there is now a compelling need for an independent report on the alleged influence peddling operation by Hunter, his uncle James Biden, and potentially his father, President Biden. ...

"In 2017, Democratic members and activists were adamant that the Justice Department should carry out an investigation involving President Trump and his family. Then-Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) insisted that, without a special counsel, 'every American will rightfully suspect ... a coverup.'

"There is already a federal criminal investigation into these matters involving Hunter Biden, and the latest emails now link President Biden receiving money and benefits from related accounts as well as key players. Even if one questions a direct conflict of interest, it is hard to deny the towering appearance of a conflict in the ongoing investigation.

"'The Big Guys' is now president and his administration is handling an investigation that could have political as well as legal implications for him and his family. It may be time for a special counsel."

On the Biden Administration's Mass Release of Illegal Immigrants Into the United States:

"At least 160,000 illegal immigrants have been released into the U.S., often with little to no supervision, by the Biden administration since March -- including a broad use of limited parole authorities to make more than 30,000 eligible for work permits since August, Border Patrol documents obtained by Fox News show.

"The documents give a partial snapshot into how the Biden administration has been releasing enormous numbers of migrants into the U.S., often with little to no oversight, supervision or immediate risk of deportation.

"Since March 20, at least 94,570 illegal immigrants have been released into the U.S. with Notices to Report. Those who receive such a notice are only required to check in with an ICE office when they get to their final destination -- which could be anywhere across the country. Those who check in are not deported or detained as their immigration proceedings move forward.

"Meanwhile, since Aug 6th, the administration has released roughly 32,000 immigrants into the U.S. via parole -- which gives migrants a form of legal status and the ability to apply for work permits."

On Gas Prices and President Biden's Energy Policies:

"Over a 10-year period, the shale revolution...created a vibrant and prosperous industry in the U.S. reviving rural areas and bringing top-paying jobs to those involved. Two consecutive presidents had the good sense to stay mostly out of its way.

"Now, President Joe Biden is trying to throw away the independence, prosperity, and carbon emissions reductions that fracking has conferred upon the nation. All this just to appease environmental extremists whose support he needs and who think it is possible to wish away humanity's need for abundant energy.

"The price of this idiocy is being reflected at the pump every time you fill up. You may have noticed the price of gasoline is up almost 50% from where it was a year ago. It is now at its highest point in seven years.

"Biden, whose first acts in office included a ban on domestic oil exploration on federal land and the cancellation of a needed oil pipeline, has responded to this situation not by encouraging more domestic production. Instead, he repeatedly approaches OPEC, hat in hand, begging the cartel and even the Russians to produce more oil for him. To see him beg foreign enemies to save his political standing is genuinely pathetic and degrading."
